A jazz trio from London; Partikel

Piano-less trio delivers discreetly elegiac melodies alongside their stinging grooves.”

This is what BBC recently said about UK based trio Partikel. A stunning, energetic trio with sax, bas and drums.Partikel are three London based musicians;

Duncan Eagles – Tenor and Soprano Saxophone,
Max Luthert – Double Bass
Eric Ford – Drums and Percussion

All with very different musical backgrounds, who have come together to make music mixing all of their favorite influences in a melodic, coherent and accurate way. The music puts an interesting twist on the standard jazz format while still honoring the tradition of deep harmony and creative improvisation.
Drawing influence from African and Latin American music combined with the style of the contemporary New York jazz scene (Marcus Strickland, David Sanchez, Miguel Zenon), Partikel produce a personal, committed and contemporary take on the saxophone trio. Soulful melodies are mixed seamlessly with complex mixed meter vamps and an instantly identifiable energy and band sound.
I love their grooves and flows and I will be looking forward working we these 3 young  guys who just released their 2nd album  “Cohesion” on Whirlwind Recordings  .They have already excited both BBC and All AboutJazz.  I really hope that these young guys from London town will also excite you.

Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard new album details leaked. Release date 21 April 2012

Vesper ( latin = “evening”), evening prayer exercised in the Catholic Church

"Vesper" has been growing and growing while listening at home, played loud.  No portable headset. Just at home. Rid of all distractions, and yes - even him and her. I turned off my cell phone. I turned off all things that rings and beeps  or rattles or whistles. I took the sofa. Can´t wait for the vinyls to arrive.

Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard , Danish awarding winning composer and saxophone player, has been working  and writing on his 4th album during the summer 2011 and finally recorded it in September 2011. "Vesper" may be his most ambitious work as composer, arranger and instrumentalist. It's an album where the band leader has taken a step aside in his own music and instead written  an open musical landscape wherein the other musicians  takes you on a spiritual travel. An album of silence, genuine spirituality and musical strength and love.

Løkkegaard is part of the young emotional jazz composers coming out of the Copenhagen jazzscene. Just like the Danish piano player / composer August Rosenbaum  or the Danish guitarist /composer Jakob Bro, Løkkegaards sincere minimalistic blue atmosphere speaks in a modern musical language that seems to captivate a growing audience; both in Denmark and internationally.

Tracklist:
Vesper I, Vesper II, Vesper III, Vesper IV,
Transition
Sirius I, Sirius II, The Lover, Lux, Algol I, Algol II, Nox

"Vesper" is  12 compositions, where Løkkegaard himself only appears on 4 of them.  These 12 compositions are guiding you through the night.  At the beginning 4 Vespers and then a sudden Transition. You are thrown out in the deep space between the stars, where you are destined to encounter old loved ones, the demons, the light and in the end the darkness. The tactile, wooden-like and dark sound of the clarinets creates the foundation in the dramatic meeting with the other instruments, where Marilyn Mazur (perc) and Jakob Bro's (gui) improvisations creates a lightful landscape of sound emotions. Along with Jakob Buchanan's flugelhorn and the clarinets from Ole Visby, Tine Vitkov, Birgit Bøgh Sønderriis and Mette Alrø Stoktoft, Løkkegaards music is stronger, darker and lighter than ever.

The album will be released on his own label Hiatus on both CD and  2 vinyl album. Release date is the 21st  April 2012, but you can already pre-listen to 3 tracks here.
For any further information, please do not hesitate in getting back to me.

Enjoy and listen !!

With Jesper Zeuthen Trio the Danes are pretty lucky

"A game has jammed my mind: If Albert Ayler had been born in Denmark he must have sounded like Jesper Zeuthen and hardly been dead yet. But Ayler is gone and was not born in Denmark, but Zeuthen is born in Denmark and more alive and kicking that ever. How lucky the Danes are"

So it starts, the passionated review from  Bjarne Søltoft in the  latest Norway jazzmagazine JazzNytt.
Its one of these rare reviews that makes me proud working with such fine talent and legacy as Jesper Zeuthen and his hard working trio. Together with basplayer Adam Pultz Melbye and drummer Thomas Præstegaard, Jesper Zuethen is fresher and cooler than ever. And especially the international press seems to pay attention to this powerful trio. From Uk Jazz Radio to the New Yorker All About Jazz and the jazzbloggers at  Jazzwrap, seems to be picking up on both their first album and their latest  album "live" (Blackout Music).

The trio has lately been performing some underground shows in Blå Records in Blågaardsgade, in central Nørrebronx, Copenhagen - just opposite Props bar. Small intense concerts in a space not much more than 15 sq.m.  big, with a quintet feat. extra tuba by kristian Tangvik and trumpet player Kasper Tranberg. With 10 audience it feels already pretty packed and with more it becomes the most intense and smallest concert place in Copenhagen. Just perfect if you want to get real close to the band and they music. And with 4 Wednesday sessions in one month you have a good chance to enjoy the colours, spirit and intense music of Jesper Zeuthen and his fellows. So, how lucky are we Danes ??? I say pretty lucky indeed...
